As mentioned in my ‘Let’s Eat, New Orleans!‘ post, I am starting a foodie series of sorts on where to grab good food and drinks. The ‘Let’s Eat! Let’s Drink!‘ series will highlight the best food and drink spots I’ve came across in my own backyard of the metro Detroit area plus places I’ve came across while traveling. For this post, I decided to tap my sorority sister, Daisha, who I consider to be a happy hour connoisseur to develop of list of Happy Hour spots to frequent in the metro Detroit area.
Hey y’all! What’s good, my name is Daisha a.k.a Deezy. I like to think of myself is as a true “D” girl. I was born and raised in the city of Detroit and I can’t imagine being from anywhere else. I’ve seen where Detroit has been and I love the revitalization that the city is going through. With the rebirth of Detroit, so many cool places are popping up all over the city and I am here to expose them all to you. Think of me as your millennial homegirl, giving you deets on all the cool bars, museums, street art, events and parties happening in the “D”.
I’m a Happy Hour Fanatic. Going to a bar after work to decompress and indulge in discounted cocktails and appetizers is one of my weekly self care rituals. Below I’ve listed some of my all-time faves spots!
Starter’s Bar & Grill — 4501 Woodward, Detroit
Starter’s Bar & Grill is literally a hood classic. I have been going to Starter’s since they only had one location on Plymouth! They’ve bossed up to 3 locations now but these days, I usually go to the Midtown one. Starter’s is always a great option because the drinks are always STRONG, the vibe is chill and the Midtown location has a great mix of people that go there. Starter’s has happy hour DAILY 2pm-7pm and they also offer late night happy hour 11pm-close Thursday-Sunday.
Bobcat Bonnie’s — 1800 Michigan, Detroit
Bobcat Bonnie’s is located in Corktown, on Michigan and 12th St. The area is quite gentrified and hipstery but that hasn’t stopped me from hanging there. Their happy hour is literally undefeated, they have the BEST craft cocktails and during happy hour ALL of them are $5. My favorite is the 57, which I think was made for me because it has Vodka AND Champagne. Very classy cause it is served in a flute but don’t get it twisted, it still packs a punch! I think the Bonnie will give you the most bang for your buck though, it has Moonshine in it but I promise you won’t die. They have appetizers also on special during happy hour ranging from $5-$7. This is a place that is great for groups, their appetizers are HUGE, so everyone can share. Bobcat Bonnie’s has happy hour every day 4pm-7pm, Monday-Friday. BB’s also offers late night happy hour on Thursday which is 4pm-close.
Centaur — 2233 Park Ave., Detroit
Centaur is a sophisticated lounge. The vibe there is very grown and sexy. Centaur is a great spot to take anyone to; however, I think it is perfect for dates or dining dolo (if that is your thing). Centaur specializes in small plates and Martinis. Happy hour is Monday-Friday 4pm-7pm and you can get $5 Martinis, wine and select small plates. I LOVE their Pear Martini and the Bellini, cause I can NEVER have enough champagne!
Bar 7 & Grill — 24528 W. 12 Mile, Southfield
Ok, so Bar 7 is not actually located in Detroit. It’s in Southfield, but when discussing happy hours you can not NOT discuss them! Bar 7’s happy hour is straight and to the point but tread lightly, Bar 7’s bartenders have heavy hands. YOU WILL NEED A DESIGNATED DRIVER, pace yourself! What I love most about Bar 7 is that they offer happy hour on the weekend, Saturday AND Sunday! Truly Iconic! $5 Martinis and Long Islands and ½ off personal pizzas and wings. You can’t beat that with a stick! Bar 7 has happy hour ALL DAY Sunday and Monday. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday happy hour is from 4pm-7pm; and, Saturday 12pm-7pm.
Big Fish — 700 Town Center Dr., Dearborn
Big Fish, which is under the Landry’s Restaurant/Muer Seafood Restaurants family, also isn’t in Detroit. However, it is right outside of the city located in Dearborn and the Fairlane complex. Big Fish has classy upscale vibes but the happy hour won’t break your bank. They offer Happy Hour Monday-Friday 3pm-6:30pm and on Saturday 12pm-5pm. They have a huge selection of drinks and food options all ranging between $3-$7. Pro Tip: Go on a Wednesday and sit out on the patio because they have live jazz!
I hope you enjoyed my recommendations and get a chance to check them all out. Remember–alway be sure to get lit, responsibly!
